Abstract:

Studies of human visual perception provide insights for image processing
and computer vision. What you think you see is affected by how your visual
system processes visual inputs. While perception begins with the stimulus
in the eye, contextual information and prior knowledge are combined for
inference in the brain.

In this talk, I present research projects that analyze multi-scale
contrast, depth, and geometric cues in the images and help users to
achieve desired photographic effects and scene information. In addition, I
address how our choices of computational techniques are related to human
visual perception.

Biography:

Soonmin Bae is a Senior Research Engineer at Samsung Techwin. She received
her Ph.D. (2009) and M.S. (2005) under the supervision of Prof. Fredo
Durand in Electrical Engineering and Computer Science at the Massachusetts
Institute of Technology (MIT), where she was a member of the Computer
Science and Artificial Intelligence Laboratory (CSAIL). She earned her
B.S. at the Korea Advanced Institute of Science Technology (KAIST) in
2003. She works on computer vision and image processing.

Her Ph.D. research topics include multi-scale image feature analysis and
synthesis inspired by human visual perception and computer-vision-based
visual guidance for human movement. Her research at Samsung Techwin
focuses on developing real-time computer vision algorithms for autonomous
vehicles and surveillance cameras.
