Increasing Access to Knowledge: The Contribution of Open Access Publishing
Speaker: Prof. John Willinsky University of British Columbia Canada Title: Increasing Access to Knowledge: The Contribution of Open Access Publishing Date: Monday, 09 Feb 2004 Time: 4:00pm - 5:00pm Venure: Lecture Theatre F (Leung Yat Seng Lecture Theatre) (near lift nos. 25/26) ABSTRACT: In response to a number of pressing intellectual, economic, social and technical issues that currently face scholarly publishing, the Public Knowledge Project has developed open source systems that will support an alternative knowledge economy for scholarship. This presentation will demonstrate the potential of new management and publishing systems for improving both the accessibility and scholarly quality of research journals and conferences. The systems are designed for editors and conference directors, with few technical skills, and intended to enable more research to be made open access, as well as support the publishing activities and research capacities of developing countries. BIOGRAPHY: John Willinsky is the Pacific Press Professor of Literacy and Technology at the University of British Columbia and author of If Only We Knew: Increasing the Public Value of the Social Sciences (Routledge) and Technologies of Knowing (Beacon), among other books. For a working preview of the publishing software, as well as access to Willinsky's papers on these themes, see the Public Knowledge Project (http://pkp.ubc.ca).
