Title: "Theoretical Elements in Computer Science Research
                 and Paper Writing"

Date: Monday, 2 March 2015

Time: 4:00pm - 5:00pm

Venue: Lecture Theater F (near lifts 25/26), HKUST

Abstract:

Research papers in top computer science venues often contain a strong
theoretical component, even for areas outside theoretical computer
science. Many results, techniques, and ideas in theoretical computer
science can prove valuable, or at least shed light on how things should be
done in practice. More importantly, the training of rigorous mathematical
thinking and formalization provided by theoretical studies is instrumental
to your independent research capability. In this seminar, I will talk
about how theory can help you in terms of paper writing and research
development.

This seminar belongs to the course series COMP 6770: Professional
Development in Computer Science and Engineering

Biography:

Ke YI is an Associate Professor in the Department of Computer Science and
Engineering, Hong Kong University of Science and Technology. He obtained
his B.E. from Tsinghua University and Ph.D. from Duke University, in 2001
and 2006 respectively, both in computer science. Before joining HKUST, he
was a researcher in the database department at AT&T Labs. His research
focus is on massive data algorithms and their applications in database
systems.
