A System for Large Scale Machine Learning
------------------------------------------------------------------------- ***Joint Seminar*** The Hong Kong University of Science & Technology Department of Computer Science and Engineering Department of Mathematics ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Speaker: Professor Tong ZHANG Professor, Rutgers University Baidu's Big Data Lab, Beijing Title: "A System for Large Scale Machine Learning" Date: Monday,16 May 2016 Time: 4:00pm - 5:00pm Venue: Lecture Theater F (near lift 25/26), HKUST Abstract: An emerging trend in the internet industry is to create intelligent systems based on big data machine learning. In order to make significant progress in machine intelligence, in recent years a new generation of machine learning systems have been created to learn from data so large that traditional approaches would fail. This industrial trend has created great demands for developing machine learning platforms that can handle very big data under the distributed computing environment. In this talk, I will present a large scale machine learning system called PULSAR, which we developed at Baidu, and has already been used by many product lines. We will describe the system design, as well as advanced machine learning algorithms we have deployed to make large scale machine learning possible in practice. ******************* Biography: Dr. Tong Zhang is currently directing Baidu's Big Data Lab in Beijing, and is a professor at Rutgers University. Previously he has worked at IBM T.J. Watson Research Center in Yorktown Heights, New York, and Yahoo Research in New York city. His research interests include machine learning, big data analysis, and their applications. Dr. Zhang received his PhD degree from Stanford Computer Science.
