Medical Image Computing: Harvesting the Healing Power of AI and Domain Knowledge
Speaker: Professor Jiebo LUO Albert Arendt Hopeman Professor of Engineering Professor of Computer Science University of Rochester USA Title: "Medical Image Computing: Harvesting the Healing Power of AI and Domain Knowledge" Date: Friday, 11 August 2023 Time: 10am - 11:30am Venue: Room 2504 (via lift 25/26), HKUST Abstract: Healthcare is a domain where AI, machine learning, and data science can make real, big differences. While short-term successes are achieved by the powerful combination of better engineering, larger datasets, and better hardware, such an approach faces unique challenges in the healthcare domain. We discuss our recent work that attempts to move beyond short-term successes, from computing-intensive and data-intensive to knowledge-intensive and modality-rich, from classification to semantic description, from diagnosis only to including prediction and intervention, and from use in hospitals and clinics to home, mobile, and telemedicine. ******************* Biography: Jiebo Luo is the Albert Arendt Hopeman Professor of Engineering and Professor of Computer Science at the University of Rochester, which he joined in 2011 after a prolific career of 15 years at Kodak Research His research spans computer vision, NLP, machine learning, data mining, computational social science, and digital health. He has authored nearly 600 technical papers and more than 90 U.S. patents. He served as program co-chair of ACM Multimedia 2010, IEEE CVPR 2012, ACM ICMR 2016, and IEEE ICIP 2017, and general co-chair of ACM Multimedia 2018 and IEEE ICME 2024, as well as on the editorial boards of several IEEE Transactions journals and publications. He was the Editor-in-Chief of the IEEE Transactions on Multimedia (2020-2022). Professor Luo is a Fellow of NAI, ACM, AAAI, IEEE, SPIE, and IAPR, as well as a Member of Academia Europaea.
