Abstract:

Healthcare is a domain where AI, machine learning, and data science
can make real, big differences. While short-term successes are achieved
by the powerful combination of better engineering, larger datasets,
and better hardware, such an approach faces unique challenges in the
healthcare domain. We discuss our recent work that attempts to move
beyond short-term successes, from computing-intensive and data-intensive
to knowledge-intensive and modality-rich, from classification to semantic
description, from diagnosis only to including prediction and intervention,
and from use in hospitals and clinics to home, mobile, and telemedicine.
