The Story of Mobile Networks: Wireless Communications R&D in Hong Kong

Date: 30 September 2015 (Wednesday)
Time: 6:00pm-7:00pm
Venue: LTB, moved to LTK
Title: The Story of Mobile Networks: Wireless Communications R&D in Hong Kong
Speaker: Dr. Eddy Chiu, Manager (Wireless Systems), ASTRI

Abstract:

Hong Kong has one of the most advanced network infrastructures and a strong technology R&D capability. ASTRI (Applied Science and Technology Research Institute) is a Hong Kong government funded not-for-profit research institute. In this presentation, the speaker from ASTRI will first introduce the evolution of mobile networks, from 1G systems of the 1980s to 5G systems that are expected to be commercially launched around 2020. The speaker will then summarize the key milestones of ASTRI's 4G/5G R&D, which cover a number of commercialized products and pioneering technology trials. Finally, the speaker will share experience in 4G/5G systems algorithm design, hardware implementation, protocol development, and testing.

The ASTRI Communications Technologies Division is currently looking for talented fresh graduates and interns from electronic engineering and computer science disciplines. What are you doing after school? ASTRI is building the next generation network!

Speaker profile:

Dr. Eddy Chiu is a Manager (Wireless Systems) at ASTRI. His research interests cover 1) 5G wireless communication technologies; 2) LTE (Long Term Evolution) and LTE Advanced system design and network planning; and 3) localization technologies. Eddy received the PhD degree in Electronic and Computer Engineering from the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology, Hong Kong, and the MASc and BASc (Honors) degrees in Engineering from Simon Fraser University, Canada.
