Abstract:

The Noah's Ark Lab was founded in Hong Kong in 2012. The basic mission is to conduct state-of-the-art research in data mining, machine learning and artificial intelligence by exploring theories and building intelligent systems. Their goal is to push the frontier of our understanding on how knowledge can be learned and intelligence can be realized from the Big Data. It is the first large-scale industrial research lab in Hong Kong, and aim to attract the best talents from the world. Their interests include natural language understanding and information retrieval, large-scale data mining and machine learning, social media and mobile intelligence, human-computer interaction and systems, as well as machine learning theory.

Prof. Qiang Yang was the founding head of Huawei Noah's Ark Lab from 2012 to 2014. In this period, the lab took on some very ambitious projects that quickly turned to fruition and brought value to industry. In this talk, I will contrast life as a Professor vs. an industrial researcher. I will particularly point out some exciting aspects of working in industrial research labs.
