Abstract

Vascular disease is one of the major causes of death and disability
worldwide. In the 2000 World Health Report, the World Health Organization
(WHO) recognized the ten leading killer diseases worldwide (WHO, 2000).
Cerebrovascular disease was ranked number three. A treatment can be
planned to a patient who suffering cerebrovascular disease by the help of
vascular imaging such as 3-Dimension (3-D) angiograms. Those 3-D
angiograms of that patient used to comprehend the pathology and the
peripheral vasculature. And the effectiveness of the operation can be
obtained by access anew set of 3-D angiograms which taking after the
treatment. Therefore, segmentation of those 3-D angiograms play a
essential role to treat vascular disease. A good segmentation provides
patient-specific 3-D vascular models. Radiologists/ interventionists can
use those models to measuring clinical parameters of interest, such as
stenosis severity and the neck width and the dome height of a cerebral
aneurysm, on these models in order to further characterize vascular
diseases.

Hence, this research focused on the segmentation of 3-D angiograms. We
reviewed the axis-based vascular segmentation algorithm proposed by Wilbur
C. K. Wong and Albert C. S. Chung. The aim was to investigate a user
friendly algorithm which can provide a good segmentation on the medical
image for treatment planning or other analysis.
