Title: "Volume Visualization with Voxel Bar Charts"

Abstract

Volume visualization can help users explore volumetric data by assigning
different opacities and colors to voxels and then rendering them into an
image to reveal 3D structures. Traditionally, opacities and colors are
specified by transfer functions for voxels according to their density
values. It is difficult to intuitively manipulate and render voxels
individually. In this thesis, a volume visualization system using a novel
technique called voxel bar chart is presented. Voxel bar charts
arrange voxels into a 2D space and visually encode various attributes of
voxels. They allow users to intuitively track and edit voxels, specify
opacity and color to an individual or a group of voxels, and achieve
various visual effects at the voxel-level. Various applications of voxel
bar charts are demonstrated, including facilitating micro-analysis of
iso-surfaces, detecting narrowness of vessels, tracking visibility of
voxels, and specifying multidimensional transfer functions.
