Abstract

As the Augmented Reality (AR) technology becomes more and more advanced,
and the computing abilities of mobile phones become more and more powerful,
we can now use Mobile Augmented Reality (MAR) technology to enhance
navigation systems. Through AR technology, we can directly see a virtual
path and the real world through our mobile devices. We no longer have to
understand a complex map or confusing directions text or speech. Moreover,
the few seconds spent on understanding a map can be saved so that user can
focus on other things instead. The goal of this final year thesis is to do
some research on indoor MAR navigation system with focus on the AR part. To
do this, a small-scale indoor MAR navigation system for a portion of the
HKUST will be developed.
