FYP Supervised by Prof. Gary CHAN Received Silver Award of ASM Technology Award 2021

DSCT undergraduate students Hiu Yan CHENG, Ting Fung HO, Sze Chun LEUNG and Chun Hoi YU received Silver Award of ASM Technology Award 2021 with their Final Year Project titled "WiFi Sensing and Bus Queue Analysis for a Smart Campus", supervised by Prof. Gary Chan. The same project is also a winner of Best CSE Final Year Projects (FYPs) and CSE Best FYP Video of the year.

The project is designed to address the time-consuming and frustrating bus queueing issue at our North and South Gates in HKUST. Using big data mining and analytics techniques, the project estimates the crowdedness level and queuing time of passengers in both gates by sensing the signals emitted from users' WiFi devices in a privacy-preserving and real-time manner. The collected data are then further processed to filter noisy or unwanted signals and classified into different bus lanes according to the signal strength. Ultimately, passengers can then know the crowdedness indicator, estimated queuing time, queue lengths, and other statistical data through a website accessible from both PC and mobile devices.

The ASM Technology Award is launched by ASM Pacific Technology Limited (ASMPT) in 2015 for final year students in Hong Kong. It promotes technological innovation, and honours the best and brightest students with their outstanding final year projects on technology and innovation.

Congratulations to Hiu Yan, Ting Fung, Sze Chun, Chun Hoi and Prof. Chan!
