COMP 1991 Industrial Experience

Introduction

As part of the program requirements, students are required to take COMP 1991 (Industrial Experience). To fulfill the requirement of COMP 1991, students should take full-time internship training for a period of at least six weeks, typically during the summer of Year 2 or Year 3, in an organization or company recognized by the Department for providing qualified internship training relevant to the computer science and engineering profession. Students are highly recommended to take advantage of the internship training opportunity as more and more companies only offer graduate jobs to candidates with prior internship experience. See Internship Opportunities for more information. Internship applications should be submitted in the Internship & Industrial Training System (except BDT minor students).

Those who fail to take part in internship training may be approved to fulfill the COMP 1991 requirement by taking industrial training modules during the winter/summer of Year 4.

Currently there are three industrial training modules for COMP students:

  • Linux System Administration
  • Linux Network Administration
  • Windows Server Administration

If students do not complete an internship by the end of year 3, they would be required to complete the industrial training modules organized by Industrial Training Center (ITC) on the winter or summer semester in their final year. For information such as schedule and timetable of the industrial training modules, students could find the information at the ITC website. For enquiries regarding industrial training modules, students may contact ITC directly at .

Q1. I have received an internship offer and would like to use it to fulfill the requirements of COMP 1991, what are the procedures of seeking application approval?

For COMP as first or second major students under SENG

After students have submitted the offer letter and filled in the application form in the Internship & Industrial Training System, they would need to send email to to seek the Internship Coordinator's approval BEFORE the start of the internship. After the internship is approved, the status at the Internship & Industrial Training System would be updated as "Approved on 2. (By Approver) Initial Approval" and as the system would not send email updates to students, students would have to check the system regularly if the status have been updated or not.

Q8. I would like to fulfil COMP 1991 with industrial training courses instead of performing an internship, may I have more information about industrial training courses?

Industrial training courses are managed by Industrial Training Center (ITC) directly. Students who choose to fulfill the COMP 1991 requirements with industrial training courses would have to take 3 training modules (1 week for each training module) and complete reports in the Winter semester of their year 4 studies. In case students cannot attend the classes in the Winter semester, they may also take the makeup classes offered in the summer semester thereafter. Details of the industrial training courses could be found at the ITC website.

Q9. I am planning to graduate earlier, may I take the industrial training courses during the Winter semester of year 3 studies or the makeup classes during the Summer semester of year 3 studies?

As students are expected to only take industrial training courses at the winter/summer semester of their Year 4 studies, if students would like to take the courses earlier, they would have to seek the Internship Coordinator's special approval. If the request is approved, the decision then be passed to Industrial Training Center (ITC) and the student would be enrolled to the courses by ITC.

Q10. I have recently dropped COMP major or BDT minor, may I still enroll to COMP 1991, fulfill the requirements and get the credits?

COMP 1991 is exclusively for COMP / COSC major and BDT minor students. If you aren't enrolled to either one category, you may not enroll to COMP 1991. If you recently dropped COMP major / BDT minor, you would also have to manual drop COMP 1991 yourself.

Q11. I would like to perform an internship outside Hong Kong, are there additional procedures or documents I have to submit/report to HKUST?

If students would like to perform an internship outside Hong Kong, they would have no additional procedures or documents needed to submit to HKUST. However, the student would have to confirm that he/she has the relevant visa/documents to work in the foreign country.

Q12. I am a non-local student. Is "No Objection Letter" (NOL) necessary for performing an internship?

Yes, you must hold a valid NOL take up an internship. Non-local students will receive a No-Objection Letter (NOL) together with your student visa label/entry permit. A valid NOL implies that the Hong Kong Immigration Department allows you to engage in the following types of employments:

  1. Part-time on-campus employment offered by the HKUST
  2. Summer job from 1 June to 31 August (both dates inclusive)

However, if your internship falls outside the summer job period as stated above, you are required to apply for a separate NOL to engage in curriculum-related internship. To apply for this separate NOL, please refer to the "Special Notes for Non-local Students Working in Hong Kong" section of Opportunities for Students in SENG website and submit the required documents to Ms. Sylvia MAK at Room 3528 for endorsement. It normally takes 2-4 weeks for the whole endorsement process. Also, you are required to apply for Leave from Study (UG) together with your unofficial transcript and supporting documents. The approval for Leave from Study is a prerequisite for your application to be endorsed by SENG.

If you lose the NOL, you will need to re-apply for it from the Immigration Department.

Q13. I am a CSE student but could not be able to access the Internship & Industrial Training System to submit applications. What should I do?

As the Internship & Industrial Training System is managed by Center for Industry Engagement & Internship (IEI) directly, students would need to email to enquire about the issue.

Please read the student user guide.
